Hope A Life's program Against Gender-Based Violence combats GBV through community education about equal rights, counseling for survivors, legal aid, and safe shelter provision. We work to break cycles of violence and create communities where women and girls can live free from fear and abuse.
The Crisis
In Kenya, 45% of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical or sexual violence. Gender-based violence remains a pervasive issue, rooted in gender inequality, harmful cultural norms, and economic disparities. GBV has devastating physical, psychological, and social consequences for survivors and their communities.
Our Comprehensive Approach
We address GBV through prevention, protection, response, and advocacy, working with communities, government agencies, and survivors to create lasting change.
Community Education and Awareness
We conduct workshops, dialogues, and media campaigns to challenge harmful gender norms, promote equal rights, and educate communities about GBV prevention and response. We engage men and boys as allies in ending violence against women.
Counseling and Psychosocial Support
We provide trauma-informed counseling, support groups, and mental health services for GBV survivors. Our trained counselors help survivors heal from trauma and rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.
Legal Aid and Justice
We offer free legal assistance to help survivors navigate the justice system, secure protection orders, and pursue legal action against perpetrators. We work with police and courts to improve GBV case handling and ensure accountability.
Safe Shelter and Protection
We operate safe houses and emergency shelters for survivors at immediate risk. These facilities provide secure accommodation, basic needs, and comprehensive support services during crisis periods.
Economic Empowerment
We provide vocational training, business skills, and startup capital to help survivors achieve economic independence, reducing their vulnerability to violence and exploitation.
Healthcare and Medical Support
We ensure survivors receive appropriate medical care, including treatment for injuries, sexual and reproductive health services, and HIV prevention and testing.
"After years of abuse, Hope A Life gave me a safe place to heal and the legal support to stand up for my rights. Today, I run my own small business and mentor other survivors." - Grace, Program Beneficiary
Impact & Future Goals
We've supported over 2,800 survivors, provided 65 safe shelters, and handled 180+ legal cases. Communities report increased awareness and reduced tolerance for GBV. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our reach to more rural areas, strengthen partnerships with healthcare providers, and enhance economic empowerment programs for long-term sustainability.
